Will Russell become a Ram?

Following on from my article on Derby County’s striking department last week, speculation has increased over the Rams’ interest in Dundee United striker Johnny Russell. Today, a further breakthrough in that speculation has arisen.

It is understood that Derby have made an approach. A number of Championship clubs have been interested.

According to reports from Scotland on the BBC’s sport website, Derby County are the Championship who have made an offer for Russell. In the report it says that the Scottish club intend to sell the striker and that there’s no chance he’ll extend his current contract, which has one year left to run. According to that report, the Rams have had a bid rejected along with Italian side Catania.

Meanwhile in the Derby Telegraph, things are slightly different. Their report says that they understand that no bid has yet been made. It’s clear they’re pretty reliable on all things the Rams from previous occasions.

These two slight contrasts do question the difference between a formal offer and an informal inquiry. I suppose time will only tell with this matter. What’s clear is that he is someone that’s been on the club’s radar, Derby are thought to have watched the 23-year-old for a while.

During the 2012/2013 campaign, the SPL striker bagged 20 goals in 38 appearances. However, scoring goals in England’s second tier is much different to in Scotland. Apart from the gem we all know about, Craig Bryson, few from that league have proved to be hits in the Championship. It’s a whole different standard. Maybe Russell, who’s represented Scotland at youth levels, is an exception. His goal tally is impressive, should he arrive at Pride Park I’d have to wait and see. I certainly wouldn’t jump for joy if the club’s pursuit for the  player ends in his signature with the Rams. I’m slightly skeptical due to Chris Maguire, Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller – they all struggled to find their feet in England after success north of the border.

Anyway, here’s a video of him in action.

I’m sure there’s plenty to come on that. Lastly, I’ll leave you with that goal that promoted the Rams to the top flight. The club’s 2007 promotion was precisely six years ago today.
