Who should be Derby’s new captain? Following Shackell’s departure and Barker’s injury

Following stand in skipper Jason Shackell’s departure to Burnley and usual captain Shaun Barker’s injury who should be Derby’s new captain? It could well be a new signing that hasn’t happened yet but here are the possible captains of the current squad. Before Jason Shackell left for Burnley he would have been the man to captain Derby this season after the unfortunate injury of Shaun Barker. With the current squad being so young and only one signing brought in it seems hard to pick a captain.

John Brayford

Brayford has captained The Rams in pre-season before but obviously captaining Derby in competitive matches is much different. He was an ever presented figure in his first season, not missing a single minute of competitive action and winning the club’s player of the year award. Is right back a position for a captain? Has Brayford got enough leadership qualities?

Jake Buxton

Bucko has more Championship experience than the other centre halves currently at Pride Park and centre back is considered a good position to have a captain. he has captained Derby’s reserves previously but due to Barker’s absence he played numerous times during the back end of last season. Some fans will say he isn’t good enough top play at Championship level but I think he’s always preformed well at this level, always giving an accomplished performance and never really let us down. he’s always come in and done a good job when needed, in my opinion. But is he a worthy captain?

Craig Bryson

Bryson settled into Derby life very quickly after a move from Kilmarnock and much to many fans surprise went on to have a brilliant season. He scooped all of the club’s player of the year awards. He is a real engine in central midfield, running his heart out every game. Central midfield is a popular position for captaincy. He has of course full international experience with one cap to his name for the Scots. One particular point that makes him a strong contender for captaincy is that he used to be Kilmarnock’s captain and became a key player in their side after making the move from Clyde in 2007. Interestingly, the manager of Derby in 2007 took Bryson on a week’s trail but did decide against signing him permanently. Is he a suitable leader?

The past few Rams skippers and their position.

Centre-Midfield: Robbie Savage, Full Back: Paul Connolly, Centre-Back: Alan Stubbs (not long as a captain, retired due to injury), Matt Oakley. (Shaun Barker is still captain but will unfortunately miss the whole season through injury)

Remember the new captain may be a new signing.

My opinion- I think Nigel Clough needs to sign someone, the players at the moment haven’t got enough leadership qualities. All teams need good leaders.
