It is believed (by BBC Radio Stoke) Derby have offered Crewe defender Kelvin Mellor a three-year deal at Pride Park. The 21 year old came good towards the end of last season, and was in the play-off winning team. Although he’s right-footed, he can play at left back (and all across defence!) which is possibly why Nigel Clough wants him. Crewe have also offered him a new deal (his current one has expired) but Derby seems the likely destination. He is officially a free agent now. The club have said they’re looking into the possibility of signing a young left back coming in as an understudy for Roberts but someone who can also act as a ‘utility’ player, Mellor fits that description- Young and a ‘utility’ player. he is more of a young up and coming prospect than a replacement though. He is in talks with The Rams.
