Rumours say Derby County have made a cheeky enquiry about signing defender Luke Chambers, who was released from East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest after rejecting a contract there. The former Reds skipper has actually completed a medical with Ipswich Town and appears happy with the offer of £12,000-a-week (in the region of) in a three-year deal, but is concerned about moving his family so far. Chambers was popular with Forest fans and to move to Derby would be a huge and as we know anyone who makes the move across the A52 is considered a ‘Judas’ by former fans however he wouldn’t have to move his family. Despite him being a free agent he may wait until the Forest takeover is completed and keep his options open if the Reds can make him a good enough offer for him to return to the club he has deep affection. Leeds are believed to be interested however they’re in the process of a takeover so are unable to make an exact offer, a move to Leeds seems unlikely.
Ipswich are the favourites and most likely to sign him but the rumoured late offer from The Rams could change things. Town boss and Ex-Rams boss Paul Jewell has told the Ipswich Club website that he’s as confident as he can be in football that the 26 year old centre back will be joining The Blues next week. Here’s what Jewell had to say “I’ve met Luke on a number of occasions over the summer to talk football. He’s very keen to come here and we’ve been speaking on the phone regularly over the last day or two. We’re very hopeful it will get done next week but until it’s signed, sealed and delivered, it’s not done. I’ve been in football long enough to know that there are a lot of factors in getting a player signed and I’ve learnt before that you can never be 100 per cent confident but I’m as certain as I can be at this stage that we’re almost there.”
Paul Jewell seems confident but you just never know, if this rumour is true it could well lure him to Pride Park as Jason Shackell’s replacement.
