Here are the latest transfer rumours.
Rumours emerged that West Ham striker Nicky Maynard could be on his way to Derby on a season long loan with a view to a permanent deal. He is thought to be attracting interest from Derby and a couple of other clubs. Derby manager Nigel Clough has said he will consider all options available in his search for a new striker. “The kind of striker we are looking for usually costs about £1.5m to £2m,” said Rams’ boss Clough. Nigel Clough is also considering the possibility of bringing in a striker on a long-term loan say the Derby Telegraph and yesterday’s rumours claimed Nicky Maynard was a season long loan target. Ipswich are also believed to want the striker on loan.
Bristol City sold the striker to West Ham in January for an undisclosed fee and are now looking at signing Leeds striker Ross McCormack as a replacement. Since signing for The Hammers he has only scored two goals.
Steve Davies tweeted “Sorry guys and girls. Unfortunately I am leaving and I know people are sceptical but it is honestly for family reasons. Me and my family have loved it here and I have loved playing for#dcfc but it’s time to move on- you have been great fans thankyou. My family are actually from London so I think it will be down south but not 100% just yet. Thanks for the support”. The former Tranmere striker suggested that he expected to move “down south” in his tweets on his decision to move but that comment has since been deleted. Ipswich seems the likely destination (that would reunite him with Paul Jewell, who signed him for Derby back in 2008) but manager Nigel Clough said “We haven’t had any written offers but we’ve had clubs saying ‘we can give you this for him’, and we’ve just said ‘it’s not enough at the moment’.”We will hang fire and see what happens in the next few weeks.” Nothing appears imminent.
Nigel Clough has admitted that offers for Jason Shackell are getting close to being “too good to turn down”. The Rams’ boss has also had to admit “If we did sell, we would need a replacement and that’s something we are looking at.” but Clough would be ‘delighted’ if the former Barnsley defender stayed. The Rams have already turned down four bids so far for the 28-year-old from three different clubs, Burnley (two bids), Cardiff City and Charlton Athletic. Nigel Clough expects developments over the next couple of weeks but nothing imminent. So far, the price has not been met.
The replacement Derby are believed to be lining up for Jason Shackell is 25 year old Coventry defender Richard Keogh. The Irish defender has made over 90 appearances for Coventry since joining them in 2010. Following Coventry’s relegation to League One it’s thought some players, including Keogh, want to move back to the Championship.
Derby are rumoured to be interested in singing Crewe defender Kelvin Mellor. The 21 year old came good towards the end of last season, and was in the play-off winning team. Although he’s right-footed, he can play at left back which is possibly why Nigel Clough is interested in him. Rumours say he’s been offered a three-year deal (that is possibly not true) (Crewe have also offered him a new deal) and he is thought to be making a decision. He is officially a free agent now. The club have said they’re looking into the possibility of signing a young left back coming in as an understudy for Roberts but someone who can also act as a ‘utility’ player, Mellor fits that description- Young and a ‘utility’ player. You heard it here first, I think The Rams will sign Kelvin Mellor.
Derby want Wigan’s Connor Sammon on a season long loan as Wigan look to bring in Samaras from Celtic. The rams did try to sign the Scotsman back in January 2011.
West Brom striker Simon Cox has once again been linked with The Rams, he has found first team opportunities limited at The Hawthorns and wants to get back to regular first team action. Leeds are also thought to be interested in him.
Derby want Notts County defender Krystian Pearce.
The Rams are interested in out of contract left back Lee Hills. The 22 year old was recently released by Crystal Palace.
Former Bolton winger James Caton will be at Derby for pre-season and then ‘we’ll all go from there. Good opportunity for him though’ says his agent. The 18 year old is out of contract at Bolton. From those comments it seems he’ll be a pre-season trialist.
A Twitter rumours account (@Agent7117) have said Wigan are interested in Jamie Ward, I don’t think there’s any truth in it at all but I’ll update you if it develops further.
