Player Spotlight: Paul Green and his departure from DCFC

Following the news that he’d rejected a new contract and that he is leaving the club I though I’d give my thoughts.

I never wanted Green to leave. His versatility has been important to Clough in the time he’s been with us especially when players have been out injured. I believe he was one of the better players at the club, a real engine in the midfield. Many will say Bryson is better than Green, which I would agree this season. While at DCFC he has been a reliant figure, playing the role of an attacking midfield player or a defensive midfield player.  Also while at the club he’s become an international football for the Republic of Ireland which he hadn’t done at his previous club Doncaster Rovers. Aged 29, I’m sure Greeny while be playing in the Championship next season but I wonder who? Leeds United have been linked with him. After rejecting Derby’s offer and leaving before the season’s out I think he must have a club lined up. Just a few weeks ago Clough said he remained ‘hopeful’ that the midfielder ,who’s played 146 times for Derby, would sign. When Buxton, Ward and Roberts singed their contract extensions in quick succession I wondered when and if Green’s name was going to be announced. But last Friday Nigel Clough announced he would be leaving and said “We made what we felt was a fair offer considering what stage he is at in his career and where we are But it obviously wasn’t enough. We will move on now.” I just wonder how much The Rams did offer him and it will be interesting to see what club he does move to.
